Why I looked into the immune system
At some point I asked myself why my body couldn’t manage it on its own. Everywhere I read that molluscum often clears up by itself. For me, new spots kept appearing.
In the end I got to the point of doing immune-support courses. I hoped that my body would fight the virus better if I supported my immune system.
In this article I write down what I read about the role of the immune system in molluscum. I am not a doctor and am only passing on what the sources say.
What I read about clearing up
The American Academy of Dermatology writes that, in people with a healthy immune system, the body clears the virus on its own. According to this source, for many children this happens within 6 to 9 months.
Other sources give longer periods. The Mayo Clinic writes that, without treatment, the bumps usually disappear within six months to two years. In the MSD Manual (in German) I read that it can also take longer.
To me, this mainly shows that, according to these sources, clearing up is the body’s own work. But how long it takes varies a great deal.
I found that comforting and frustrating at the same time. Comforting, because it meant that the body can basically do it. Frustrating, because for two years it didn’t happen for me, and I didn’t know why.
When the immune system is weakened
Several sources describe that molluscum can behave differently with a weakened immune system. The NHS names a weakened immune system, for example because of HIV or chemotherapy, as a reason to see a GP about molluscum. The Mayo Clinic names it as a risk factor, for example with HIV, leukaemia or during cancer treatment.
What I found important: from what I have read, a long course does not automatically mean that the immune system is weakened. Whether something like that should be looked into, only a doctor can judge.
Eczema and irritated skin
While reading, I also came across the link with eczema. The American Academy of Dermatology writes that children with eczema are particularly susceptible. As a possible explanation, it says that very dry, cracked skin may make it easier for the virus to infect the skin. According to DermNet, molluscum in children with eczema is often more extensive and lasts longer.
So this isn’t only about the body’s defences, but also about the skin as a barrier. I found that an interesting thought, because it shows that several things can play a part together. I write more about irritated skin in the article Itching and inflammation with molluscum.
When spots become inflamed
Later I came across the so-called BOTE sign (“beginning of the end”): a case report from 2025 interprets redness shortly before clearing up as a reaction of the immune system. But inflammation can also have other causes. For spots that are very red, painful or swollen, the sources mention seeing a doctor. I can’t judge something like that myself.
My hope and what I can say about it
I understand well why I turned to immune-support courses back then. When you read that the body normally clears the virus itself, it is a natural thought to want to support it. And after two years, you want to do something that is in your own hands.
Whether the immune-support courses did anything for me, I can’t say. I can neither prove it nor rule it out. I can’t and won’t make a general statement about whether such courses have any effect on molluscum. What I read about this is in the article What molluscum cost me.
Anyone thinking about something like this can discuss it with a doctor first. Such products are not suitable for everyone, and if the immune system really is weakened, care belongs in a doctor’s hands anyway.
What I know today
From everything I have read, the immune system plays a central role in whether and how quickly molluscum clears up. Why it takes months for some people and years for others, I didn’t find clearly explained in any source.
If you are in the middle of it right now and asking yourself the same question I asked back then, I understand that well. But only a doctor can give you an answer for your own body, not a personal account.
After two years it was over for me. Was it coincidence? I don’t know. How it came about, I tell in my story.
